Okay, so the last one is probably the biggest, but it is also the only one without a real answer. Ive loved the idea of revolution for longer than I can remember. The world needs to change, and we need to be the people to change it. It is all very well sitting here complaining about the ills of the world, but the only way that anything is going to happen is if we make it happen. And I think that I speak for many when I say that we do need change!
But the problem is that we cannot seem to agree on what that change needs to be, nor how to bring about the change. Im not going to sit here and tell you how to have a revolution,. I have no idea, but I can tell you that I have spent many hours dreaming of the day when the people rise up and take back what is theres. My problem is that Im not sure what it is that I want to change, and even when I do seem to know what it is that I think should change, Im buggerd if I can think of a better way of doing it.
I mean, they say democracy is supposed to work, but if that is the case then that means that we cannot have democracy, because something is totally wrong with the way that the country (the UK, just to be clear) is working at the moment. The government seems to want us to spy on each other; you only have to look at all those anti-terrorism adds to see that. Im sure that the politicians are not stupid people. Although we might like to mock and laugh at them, they have to be reasonably intelligent to do what they do. But when they start telling us to grass each other up, you have to stop and think, have any of them ever read a book? Do they not know of the dangers of a police state? Any one who has ever read George Orwells Nineteen Eighty-Four should be able to see the way that the country is going. But then, I suppose that in Nineteen Eighty-Four¬ Winston does not win, and the police state continues. As is said in the book, it is only when the masses realise just how fucked up things are that they will be able to rise up and change the world.
But the problem is that people do not know that the world is fucked. They see the problems, and they complain, but they never do anything! I once read that the only reason Atheists have such a hard time in the US is because they are all on their own. If only they could group together, get organised, then they would become one of the most powerful groups in the country. But they dont, because they are scared to Come Out. And when half of the country thinks that not believing in God is enough of a reason not to hold public office, no wonder. Organising Atheists is harder than trying to herd cats. But if the Atheists would just realise that they are not alone, that there are others who share their common sense then the world would be a better place. I long for a Church of Atheism, an organisation for those of us who have escaped the evils of religion, and who place our faith in mankind instead.
But I digress. My point is that, like Atheists in the US, trying to organise people who are willing to stand up and fight for what is right is next to impossible. People may know that they want change, but how are they supposed to find other people who share their beliefs? Trying to make the big things happen is not going to be worthwhile until we are able to organise everything.
And this is why the small things matter. If people can see change on a local level, if they can see the small things changing, then that might give them the faith that they need to make slightly bigger things happen. And then even bigger things may happen, and before we know it, the world will be good again.
Recently, at my University, there has been a massive debate over the lack of a free cash point on campus. Now, this may only be a small thing, and when you consider that there is a free cash point just up the road, you can see how small it is. But the argument does show us one thing. It shows that people are passionate about the little things, and if they can do that then they can fight about the big things.
I know that a lot of what I have said may not make a lot of sense, and that its a bit all over the place, but Im afraid that once I get going on something there is often no stopping me. All I will say now is thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope that it makes you think about what you think about.
Viva La Revolution!
